Conditions a compression tool cannot fix
Read the notification before you take the photograph, not after. Requirements about how recently it was taken, whether a date must be printed within the image, the background, and whether headwear or glasses are permitted all have to be satisfied at capture time. No amount of resizing will retrofit them.
This matters more here than on most forms because the failure is delayed. An application that uploads successfully but fails at document verification has cost you the cycle.
Preparing the file once the photograph is right
Crop to head and shoulders against the plain background, set the maximum width to whatever the portal specifies, and use target size mode for the file size ceiling. Keep JPEG — the portal accepts a named list of formats and WebP is not usually on it.
Prepare the signature separately with its own, usually tighter, limit. Sign in black ink on white paper, capture it in bright even light, and crop close.
Keep the originals
Save the uncompressed photograph and signature somewhere safe before you upload. Later stages of the process, and any subsequent application, may ask for the same images at different dimensions, and re-compressing an already compressed file degrades it a second time.
Questions
- Does the photograph really need a date printed on it?
- Some UPSC notifications have required exactly that, and the requirement has varied between cycles. Read the notification for the examination you are applying to and follow it literally. Where a date is required it must be part of the photograph itself, which means arranging it when the picture is taken.
- What resolution should I keep for the photograph?
- Match the pixel dimensions the portal specifies rather than choosing your own. Where a range is given, aim for the upper end, since a photograph at the minimum acceptable dimensions leaves no margin if a later stage asks for something larger. Keep your uncompressed original regardless.
- Is compressing an identity photograph online risky?
- It depends entirely on the tool. Anything that uploads your file has a copy of your photograph on a server. - The portal is slow and my upload keeps failing. Is that the file size?
- Frequently, yes. Application portals come under enormous load near a closing date, and a large upload is far more likely to time out midway. A file comfortably below the stated ceiling transfers in a fraction of the time and succeeds on connections where a borderline one repeatedly fails. Filing several days early avoids the worst of the congestion entirely.
